BOROUX is proud to present its latest, patented technology for removing fluoride from drinking water. A high-quality, aluminium-free solution that removes up to 99% of fluoride. By utilising a hybrid, two-layer granulate and nanocarbon material, the filter delivers safe and clean water with long-lasting performance. This new method extends the contact time between the water and the filter materials, resulting in improved filtration. These fluoride filters are compatible with the BOROUX Foundation™ Black filters and the Black Berkey filters.
 

Fluoride filter tests and results

This is perhaps the most important thing to start with if you want to find out more about these filters. The new BOROUX Proactive™ Fluoride filters have been tested up to 3,750 litres (per set of 2). The incoming test water had a fluoride concentration of 0.7 ppm (parts per million).

The performance of the BOROUX Proactive™ Fluoride filters, as determined by independent laboratory tests, is shown in green in the graph below. Three different fluoride filters from competitors are shown in various shades of grey.

The three competitors’ filters shown below use aluminium oxide in their filters to reduce fluoride levels.

How do the BOROUX Proactive™ Fluoride filters work?

The BOROUX Proactive™ Fluoride filters combine perfectly with the BOROUX Foundation™ Black filters or Black Berkey filters. Together, the filters remove virtually all unwanted contaminants.

The first stage of filtration (see illustration below) takes place as the water flows through the BOROUX Foundation™ Black filter or Black Berkey filter in the upper chamber. Chlorine, sediment and many other contaminants are reduced, the taste and odour are improved, and the water is prepared for fluoride removal. The BOROUX Proactive™ Fluoride filter is screwed onto the filter stem in the upper chamber and secured in place.

The second filtration stage (see illustration below) takes place as the water flows through the double-layered BOROUX Proactive™ Fluoride filter. The pre-filtered water flows through the advanced granulated carbon for the initial polishing (layer 1). It then passes through a hybrid nanocarbon layer for the final fluoride removal (layer 2).

Thanks to the patented upward-flow design of the stainless steel housing, the water remains in contact with the outer layer of the fluoride filters for an extended period, ensuring superior filtration. The filtered water exits the housing through the outlet holes at the top of the housing (stainless steel holders, not included with this product; see the starter kit). This ensures that the entire surface of the fluoride filters is utilised almost evenly, from bottom to top.

What materials are used in BOROUX Proactive™ Fluoride filters?

The BOROUX fluoride filter consists of two separate filtration layers which together trap fluoride. The inner layer consists of granulated carbon, a well-known method for preventing unwanted contaminants. Small, loose granules of a mixture of different types of carbon are placed in the centre of the cylindrical filter.

The outer layer of the filter is made of nanocarbon. This special carbon blend is moulded into shape and holds the granulated carbon inside. The micropores in the nanocarbon on the outside prevent contaminant molecules from passing through. Fluoride molecules are extremely small, which is why specially formulated nanocarbon is required to provide an effective barrier.

The BOROUX Proactive™ Fluoride filter is encased in a surgical-grade stainless steel housing (holder). The housing is made from food-grade stainless steel (304). It is therefore approved for contact with food and offers safety and durability. The stainless steel reduces the risk of plastic leaching. The housing is the key component of the patented upflow design, which provides extra protection against toxins in water.
The stainless steel holders are not included with this product, so if you still need the reusable stainless steel holders, please order the starter kit.
 

Non-activated aluminium oxide

Other filters use aluminium oxide as an ingredient to reduce fluoride. BOROUX refuses to use aluminium oxide because of the negative publicity it sometimes receives. Activated aluminium oxide filters can sometimes allow traces of aluminium to enter the water. Although aluminium oxide can be effective at reducing fluoride, it works best when a relatively large amount of aluminium oxide is present. Otherwise, performance begins to decline almost immediately. BOROUX decided to avoid this potential exposure by developing a filter using ingredients that do not contain aluminium (oxide).
 

How long do the BOROUX Proactive™ Fluoride filters last?

Each set filters up to 3,800 litres of water, with an average lifespan of 6 to 12 months, depending on usage and water quality. Test results for the BOROUX Proactive Fluoride Filter show a reduction of more than 99% per 1,050 litres of water, an average of nearly 80% per 3,750 litres of water and a minimum reduction of 47.4% per 3,750 litres of water.

Preparing for use
