Coldstream FTO PLUS water filter cartridge – Coldstream FTO PLUS water filter cartridges are gravity-fed filter cartridges and deliver excellent performance in reducing more than 200 contaminants, including heavy metals, fluoride, pesticides, herbicides, chlorine, chloramines, nitrate, bacteria, viruses, pharmaceuticals, microplastics, PFAS and more! Ideal for use with tap water and most natural drinking water sources (including water from lakes, rivers, streams, ponds and rainwater). They are also compatible with many brands of gravity-fed water filter systems (including Berkey, British Berkefeld, ProOne, Phoenix, Aqua Logic, Monderma, Boroux, Pure Filters and Newton).
This filter element consists of two key components. A specially formulated and unique ceramic outer layer, which provides protection against, amongst other things, bacteria, particles and microplastics. The inner layer consists of black granulated carbon media.
The Coldstream FTO PLUS water filter cartridge is NSF-certified (NSF/ANSI 42) and has been tested by a independent laboratory in accordance with NSF/ANSI standards 42, 53 and P231. See the laboratory report For further details and the website of NSF.
The Coldstream FTO PLUS filter cartridges are easy to install, use and clean. Priming is not required, and no additional filters are needed to remove fluoride. Before installation, simply rinse the outside briefly under a cold tap and, if necessary, scrub lightly with a scouring pad to remove any manufacturing residue.
We recommend cleaning the Coldstream FTO PLUS filter cartridges once a month, as well as the housings and other parts of your water filter. Then simply rinse the outside briefly under a cold tap and, if necessary, scrub gently with a scouring pad.
You need to replace them every 6 months.
Installation
Follow the step-by-step guide below:
1. Take the filter element and fit the rubber ring onto the shaft.
2. Insert the handle through a hole in the top tray.
3. Screw the wing nut onto the underside of the top housing. Once you feel resistance, it is tight enough. PLEASE NOTE! Do not overtighten it. Repeat steps 1 and 2 for any other filter elements.
4. Seal any remaining holes with plug-in plugs.
5. Place the top container on top of the bottom container.
6. Fill the top tank with water and let the water run through. We recommend discarding the first two cycles (when using new filter elements)!

My girlfriend first tried these as a replacement for the Berkey filters, and I actually think these are even better. They just need replacing more often, but that’s fine. I reckon that’s better anyway, because the gunk gets trapped inside them. I sometimes wonder where all that stuff ends up with those Berkey filters… But the taste is good, the test results are very good and the water flows through quickly. So I’ll be sticking with these from now on!

However, after hours and hours of research, I believe them to be the best available for a gravity-fed water system and, as such, I feel more comfortable drinking water from my ‘agua mina’ (water mine – Portugal).
