Berkey water filters remove more than 99.9% of chlorine, viruses, bacteria, cysts, pharmaceutical residues, parasites and hazardous chemical contaminants.  Heavy metals are filtered out at a rate of 95% (up to 100% even with fluoride and arsenic filters). The essential minerals your body needs are retained in the process.

The Black Berkey filter cartridge is unique

This filter element utilises the latest technological advances in water purification. Berkey water filters are therefore regarded as the best and most sustainable water filtration systems on the market and are the best-performing portable water filters.

All Berkey water filters come as standard with 2 original Black Berkey filter cartridges, except for the Go Berkey water filter set. You can select the elements order in sets of 2, but you can also order a single filter element from us. This is particularly handy if, for example, you want to replace the filter element in the Go Berkey, or if just one filter element in another Berkey water filter needs replacing (for instance, if it’s damaged or lost).

The Black Berkey water filter cartridge is one of the best gravity-fed filter cartridges in the world. Berkey systems fitted with these cartridges remove far more contaminants than standard water filters. A solid carbon block made from natural coconut shell, the micropores in the Black Berkey cartridges are so small that bacteria simply cannot pass through them. They are also so effective that they can remove red dyes from water without stripping away the beneficial minerals your body needs.

The Black Berkey filter cartridge also removes or reduces viruses, pathogenic cysts, parasites, harmful or undesirable chemicals such as herbicides and pesticides, VOCs, detergents, organic solvents, turbidity, trihalomethanes, sludge, sediment, heavy metals, unpleasant tastes and odours, whilst retaining the healthy and beneficial minerals your body needs. They have been tested by an independent laboratory in accordance with NSF/ANSI standards 42 and 53. See the laboratory report for further details.

Each Black Berkey element filters up to 11,350 litres of water. If you use two filters, with average usage and proper maintenance, you can expect a lifespan of between 5 and 10 years. However, we recommend replacing the Black Berkey filters every 3 years at the most. This is because we now live in a different world to that of a few years ago. The number of contaminants has only increased and they have become increasingly severe (think, for example, of PFAS or the significant rise in pharmaceutical residues, pesticides, etc.). This has a huge impact on the filters, so it is better to replace them a little sooner.
 

The box containing the Black Berkey filter element contains the following parts:

● 1x Black Berkey filter cartridge
● 1x Small black rubber ring: to be fitted between the filter element and the stainless steel housing
● 1x Wing nut: to tighten the filter element
● 1x Priming Button: a small brown rubber ring for priming the filter elements with the tap.
● 1x Berkey PrimeRite Universal Primer + PF-2 adapter: blue rubber attachment for the tap to prime the filter elements, with an adapter to also fit the Fluoride & Arsenic filters to be able to prime
● 1x English-language user manual
 
Preparing for use
The first step is to prime the Black Berkey filter cartridges. It is important that this is done properly, otherwise it will take a very long time to purify the water. If you’re unable to prime the system using the tap, then a automatic primer pump or manual primer pump order from us.
