The Royal Berkey water filter comes as standard with 2 original Black Berkey filter cartridges and can be extended to 4 elements. Black Berkey filter cartridges utilise the latest technological developments in water purification. The unit has a capacity of approximately 12.3 litres of water, which is more than enough for most needs. You can use the Black Berkey filter cartridges for several years, meaning you’ll quickly recoup the cost of the unit compared to other brands of water filters.
The housing is made of polished stainless steel (304), ensuring long-term durability.

The Royal Berkey can be easily assembled in a matter of minutes without the need for any tools. The first step in setting up a Berkey water filter is to prime the Black Berkey filter cartridges. It is important that this is done properly, otherwise it will take a very long time to purify the water. I bought this set at the end of last year. Before I did so, I had been in close contact with the seller as I had quite a few practical questions. They answered these very patiently and in detail, and gave me some really helpful advice.
Great personal attention – the sales staff know exactly what they’re doing. A solid 5 out of 5 for service! There was even a personal note included with the parcel when it was delivered; that personal touch really makes it special.
Back to the device. I’m giving it 4 stars because, in my view, it still has a few design flaws. That’s why it’s 4 stars and not 5.
– The top section always contains a layer of unfiltered water. This could be easily resolved by simply adding a double base. This means that when you top up, you’ll always have older water, which you’ll have to drain out at some point anyway. It’s an extra step every time you want to top up.
– You cannot completely empty the lower section. The tap is positioned higher than the base, so old water will remain here too if you do not empty it. A simple design modification could prevent this.
– So, to get that last “bit” out (which is actually easily over a litre), you have to remove the top section and empty the bottom section by hand. Another option is to tip the whole thing over and leave the tap open, but believe me, I wouldn’t recommend it. I’ve also no idea whether this is actually good for the filters, so that’s why I don’t do the latter.
– The water isn’t chilled, of course. We were used to getting cold water straight from the American fridge. That won’t work here. The solution is to make large ice cubes yourself and add them to the lower compartment. That works fine, but it does involve an extra step. Tip: use large ice blocks; small ones melt much faster.
– For that price, you’d expect the stainless steel tap to be included as standard; unfortunately, it has to be bought separately. It’s incomprehensible that they’re still selling this with a plastic tap….
– Applying the primer was tricky with the cap on – what a faff. In the end, I used the primer tool I’d bought with it. That took me hours, mind you – perhaps down to my own clumsiness. Unfortunately, I just had to grit my teeth and get on with it… Luckily, everything’s working a treat now.
I’d give the filtered water a solid 5, and I wouldn’t want to go back to unfiltered water. The build quality is also excellent; I’d give that a 5 as well.
Further considerations:
– In my view, a sight glass isn’t necessary because, as the advice also stated, you quickly get a feel for how much is left in the reservoir. That’s spot on! I didn’t opt for one either. Also because it would have meant being stuck with a plastic tap.
– I did buy a stainless steel tap to go with it, and that’s a no-brainer. I’d always replace the original plastic tap with this one
– The holder is incredibly handy; it makes it easy to fill your glass. It costs a bit more but is very practical.
I’m currently waiting for the Berkey Go to come back into stock, as I want to be able to filter water easily when I’m on holiday or out and about. I hope they’ll be available again soon.
