How should I store my Berkey Fluoride & Arsenic filters (PF-2)?

If you have already used the elements:

The Berkey Fluoride & Arsenic filter elements (PF-2) can be stored briefly (see below) in the refrigerator; but definitely do not store them in the freezer. To do this, remove the filters from the water filter, place them in a sealable bag or container and place the filters at the front of the fridge to prevent them from freezing.

The Fluoride & Arsenic filter elements (PF-2) only last one year. So by short-lived is meant the next use within the year. Bear in mind that the longer the elements are not in use, their ability to filter Fluoride & Arsenic may diminish. Moreover, it is wise to prime them every 2 weeks if they are kept, to keep the preservation process going.

If you have stored them in the fridge, we recommend re-priming the Berkey Fluoride & Arsenic filter elements (PF-2) before using them again. Do this for a maximum of 1 minute each in both directions.

The Berkey Fluoride & Arsenic filter elements (PF-2) should not be air-dried as this may cause some bacterial growth in the filters.

If you have never used the elements before:

If the elements are unopened and in their original packaging, make sure not to store them in a room that smells strongly, such as a laundry room or garage. The elements have carbon as one of their components, so it is possible that they absorb odours from the room in which they are stored. For example, if they are stored in a laundry room, it is possible that they will pick up the smell of highly scented items such as washing powder.
