Why We Use the Berkey Water Filter

As a family, we’re always on the lookout for the best products to support oureco-friendly lifestyle. In additiontopure, unprocessed food, we believedrinking clean, pure wateris very important. However, despite increasingly advanced technologies at water treatment plants, it’s not possible to completely remove harmful substances—at least not in a way that keeps our drinking water affordable. And when you hear that our water is becoming increasingly contaminated with pharmaceutical residues, pesticides, or lead, we believe it’s worth filtering our water with aBerkey water filter.

The Importance of Good, Clean Water

Water stimulates metabolism, promotes blood flow to our organs, andstrengthens our immune system. A healthy water balance is essential for our well-being and health. Water ensures thatmineralsand trace elements reach every cell in our body, and it also has aninternal cleansing function. Our bodies need water to flush out toxins, which is why we want to drink water that is as pure as possible, so as not to place an unnecessary burden on our bodies. That’s how we came across the Berkey water filter,the most powerful gravity-fed filter on the market. With this Berkey filter, we were able to optimize our drinking water by filtering out unwanted substances while retaining important minerals.

Our motivations

As a family, we try to drink enough water, which is whythe quality of our drinking water isimportant to us. We also want to take personal responsibility in this regard. After all, there are many hormone-disrupting and harmful substances in our environment that we can’t always avoid—such as those found in plastics, clothing, and food—but we can avoid them in our drinking water at home. We don’t want to spend large amounts of money on bottled mineral water (which, incidentally, varies in quality) and which, moreover, is often packaged in plastic. That’s why we’ve chosen to use a Berkey water filter, which effectively removes contaminants. In addition, in our experience, thewater tastes much softer and better.

How the Berkey Water Filter Works

The Berkey water filterremoves 99.9% ofchlorine, viruses, bacteria, plasticizers (BPA), drug residues, parasites, pesticides, and other chemical contaminants. It also removes more than 95% of heavy metals (up to 100% even with fluoride and arsenic filters). And this fun dye experiment clearly demonstrated just howpowerful and effective the filter is(see the last video on this page) that we tried out: fill the top compartment with water and add a quarter teaspoon of red food coloring. Then let the water drip through the filter, andthe Black Berkey filter elements will filter the food coloring out of the water. Unbelievable but true! When we poured a glass of water, it was indeed clean and crystal clear. Test passed!

Installation, Priming, and Maintenance

The first step insetting up a Berkey water filteris to prime the Black Berkey elements. It’s important to do this correctly; otherwise, purifying the water will take a very long time. If priming with the faucet doesn’t work, you can order an automatic primer pump or a manual primer pump from us.

Forcleaning, we recommend cleaning the housing once a month. The lower and upper chambers can simply be washed with soapy water and warm water. The Black Berkey elements should be cleaned once every 6 months or if you experience a drastic decrease in filtration rate and priming no longer restores the flow rate. The Black Berkey elements should simply be washed under cold running water with a scouring pad. This reopens the pores and removes all the dirt. We recommend priming the filters once every 3 months. Doing so will restorethe filter’s flow rate.
